Alright party people, it's that time of year again
!! There are new categories this year so please read the rules carefully. Any questions, pop them in this thread. Manga Art Competition London MCM Expo October 28-29Sweatdrop Studios is proud to present the October 2006 London Expo Manga Competition (www.londonexpo.com). Our sponsors so far are Letraset, E-Frontier and Tokyotoys, providing gorgeous prize packages of art supplies, software and manga goodies. We are in the process of comfirming another fab sponsor, so watch this space! The new categories are as follows: 16 and Over - Best Pre-Made Piece 16 and Over - Best Artist Alley Piece Under 16 - Best Pre-Made Piece Under 16 - Best Artist Alley Piece Pre-made means any image that you have created at home and brought to Expo. Media (CG/watercolour etc), subject matter (fanart/original) and size (A4/A3 etc) are entirely up to you. So as of now, you have exactly one month to create something for this category . Artist Alley means any image that you drew at Expo. There is always an area set aside for people to draw, with paper and materials provided. Again, subject matter is up to you...but in Artist Alley you will probably be working on A4 sized paper with pencil or traditional media. Prizes: Too long to list here...see next post . Submission: Entries must be submitted in person at London Expo. Please hand in pictures at the Sweatdrop table. We will be accepting entries throughout the entire duration of London Expo and the winners will be announced on the Sweatdrop website immediately after the event. Unfortunately we cannot accept anything by post or email. We will not be able to return entries so print-outs or photocopies are highly recommended. Display: Submitted pictures will be placed on display during London Expo. Due to a high amount of entries we may have to rotate displayed images over the two days. If you wish, you may add a discrete url or name at the front of your image. General Rules: 1) You may not enter the same category twice (e.g. two pre-made images) but you are welcome to enter two different ones (e.g. bring along a pre-made and then draw something in Artist's Alley). 2) Entries that are blatantly copied or traced from existing artwork will be disqualified. (Bear this in mind when drawing fanart...we hope to see existing characters in your style, and not a copied version of 'official art'). 3) Previous Expo winners are not eligible to win. They are welcome to enter again in order to have their work displayed or participate in Artist's Alley but they will not be able to win the main prize (many items are the same anyway ). 4) You may bring your own drawing materials to use in Artist Alley but Sweatdrop and Expo are not liable for loss or theft.

Cool, that means I won't have to slave over 2 pieces at home
![]() This should be quite an interesting competition; if the entries are going to be anything like they were last year, then I have a lot to worry about. |

Hurrah! I've been waiting for these details to be up~
Awesomesauce prizes... oooh. ![]() I'll have to work super-hard this time ![]() EDIT - Sorry, I'm guessing artwork won't be returned right? It's just a bummer to lose the pic you've drawn at the artist's alley as you won't have a copy of it. No chance at all? Even if we bought a SAE for you to post it back to us? (I'm kinda precious about my artwork... ahah. ) |

We're really sorry, but we get so many entries we cannot return them. We just do not have the manpower or time. And if we do it for one person, we have to do it for all. We wish we could!
![]() That's why we recommend submitting printouts and copies of artwork. ![]() |

Ooooooh this sounds good!
![]() Stupid question: is it okay if the drawing's been shown somewhere else first (ie. internet forums and art-sites and such) as well as at the competition? Like so long as it was done for it?

@rococo
That's a very good question . I would advise against showing it online beforehand. We hope to avoid the situation where a few individuals upload their work and receive very positive feedback (as you would). This creates unnecessary expectations and rivalry. It'd be a much better surprise if people got to see all the entries at Expo. (Of course, after it's over we can have a thread for all non-winning entries! ).

Hmmm, i'm unsure about entering.. i might do lol. The problemo is i don't have a colour printer and i have to force somebody to print of an A4 full colour picture for me if i do enter. I would have to enter a CG'd picture my traditional skeels are soo rubbish lol. XD
But i can't wait to see all your entries **loves looking at them**

About the artist alley category... how do you know if an entry is drawn in the alley and isn't something the contestant brought with them to the expo? Will someone be making checks around the tables?
Or is it that you've set out a time, say one hour on Sat and one hour on Sun, when all the contestants have to draw their entry? |

@Blossom
Sadly yes ...one year is still quite short and in the spirit of other contests (RSOM/NEO) we think that people would be upset if the same person wins twice within 12 months.@fuurin The sheets of paper used in Artist Alley will be marked with a stamp or signature thus preventing people smuggling in pre-drawn images on blank paper. There is no time limit to how long someone is allowed to spend on their entry. Though from experience I think that few people are determined (or foolhardy) enough to sit and draw for 6-10 hours straight in an Expo environment . You needn't worry about the time, the reason for the AA category is that we're looking for quality over quantity. If an artist is very skilled it will show through in a relatively quick drawing. Spend however much time you feel comfortable with in AA, and make sure you enjoy the rest of Expo!
