Default Monthly Manga Challenge June 2006

Firstly, thanks guys for the awesome comics you're drawing for these!

Ok, the first challenge is...

'That was the day I...'

Draw a one page comic starting with the above text. It can describe an important event, like falling in love, or something more trivial like first baking a cake. (Or it can be something weird like bungee jumping. ) Try to show the event with just the images, but if it makes it easier, you can complete the sentence above explaining the events of the comic (ie: That was the day I... rolled down a hill)

Second challenge!

Draw a 1-5 page comic on the subject of transformation. You can use any dialogue or characters you choose. The transformation can be anything: very literal transformation like becoming a magical girl, or more gradual transoformation, like maturing and becoming an adult.

Ok, challenge finishes 30th June! Get drawing! Yosh!!!

First reply! At least I've caught this one in time. I like the sound of the one page comic, but thats probably because I don't want to do so much work ^_^

Lovely work, you two, both of you are really good at showing a great amount of emotion through posing, and both your paneeling styles are imaginative and original, especially for a one pager! ^_^

Heres mine...its a bit stupid, but it really was the first thing that came to my head when I read 'That was the day I....'
I am not plwased with the last panel, it is far too messy =/

wellow, thanks dude i love the second panel too i was also particularly pleased with the wings (so hard to draw ) i love your style, the scratchy lines give real atmosphere, i see you also draw wings from your website.

bex, its nice to see a sweatdropper (?) taking part. its all good fun, and we all need excuses to improve. also these kind of small projects are a good excuse to try new things. love the page, made me laugh , good reactions from the characters

LOL Bex, that's cute and funny! I love the way you left out actual speech after "that was the day"...it enhances the punchline even more. The only change I can suggest is to make the panel outlines a bit thinner...your line drawings are so delicate they seem overwhelmed by the thick frames .

Ahhh, that's sweet Bex. Really cute and funny, love the expressions on the little chibis, especially on the "kissed" panel with the bugged out eyes. x3

loads of entries to look thro yay! (should have my 1st one up tonight...)

palmer-san - powerful 1-pager! the lineart gives it impact and the use of panels gives it a real flow which hold it all together *still trying to work this out myself*

wellow - yeah i find the challenges are good cos they get you out of the habit of what you'd usually draw, and they're small enough not to take too long (well...they take a lil while ) the theme of your page came across immediately to me through the use of a dark drawing style - it's very effective

bex - hehe! cool lil story! altho eww! i think the characters' reactions came across really well, and i wouldn't say the last panel was too messy as its a fast-paced page that doesn't need to look too static and posed

manga

well much as i've enjoyed playing around with computones for the 1st time this evening they aint half [word omitted ] for resizing! *grr!*

i finished my luverly page and found that to make it small enough to submit here i totally screw up my tones!

so after much monkeying about i've opened a deviant art account and plonked it in there (still working on me own website *also grr!*)

anyway please check it out here - its not amazing art but i feel like the practice is starting to pay off
