Default Tokyopop's bookshop events

Heehee, I'm putting this here because Emma & I will be involved in at least two of these! We'll be signing and giving a short talk at the event in Cambridge and in Norwich, please come along to support us! The other RSOM winners (ohohoho, spoonbard and MrMetallium on these forums) may be involved in the ones near london.

So for your info - these are Tokyopop's manga nights/afternoons at Borders and Ottakars. They usually involve a fun few hours of quizzes, prize draws and question/answers, with the nicest guy ever, Andrew Whelan of Tokyopop. And of course, if an RSOM winner can make it, we're happy to sign, and give a quick demonstration! So come along if you can!

Ottakars - Carlisle - 1st June
Ottakars - Chippenham - 6th June
Ottakars - Grimsby - 8th June

That's the list of confirmations so far. I don't really know much more about the events that this, but if you are near any of these bookstores and would like to find out more, go to the store in question and ask about timings. It should also be advertised in the local press.

Is there an official Tokyopop announcement on this? If so I can put it up on Otakunews. I'd like to avoid linking a forum in case things change etc.

What's so special about Ottakars anyway? It's not as if they're exactly well known when it comes to selling books compared to Borders or Waterstones...

*Is surprised there isn't a TP event planned at Borders in Speke near Liverpool or Warrington*

Well, Worthing looks like the one for me! Tis only 20 mins from Brighton (if you know the roads like I do, it could even take less Hehehehe)

So, have you guys gotten used to signaturing stuff yet? I haven't (footy related though) and it's still weird whenever I do so. Charity matches are awesome for it.

Ah cool! Norwich! My hometown I better make the effort to go back down for that day then I think Norwich has got quite a big comic fanbase, it's a city very big on videogames too, and I think they go hand-in-hand to some extent.

The Ottakars in Lincoln organised a tokyopop night, recently. I wasn't sure if this was an official thing, or just organised by the staff there? Are these the first official tokyopop events?

Ottakars happens to be a big supporter of Manga, hence the reason why they do these events. Ottakars has been well established for many years, there probably just isn't a big one near you, they're quite similar in stature to Borders & Waterstones.

Waterstones on the other hand, have been very very restrained towards manga, sporting very small collections only. Naughty Waterstones.

There have actually been quite a few events over the past year, I'm pretty sure there was one in Liverpool a little while ago, but I've only put up the current ones/planned ones which haven't happened yet.

I think from what I read on the Ottakar's website that the nearest one to me is in Macclesfield which is on the other side of Cheshire! [I live in Runcorn on the River Mersey across from Widnes and is the place where "Two Pints of Lager... And A Packet of Crisps" is set]

The nearest big bookshops to me are Waterstones in Liverpool and Warrington along with Borders in Speke and Warrington which is the price I pay for living in such a cultural backwater like Runcorn [a place where the local cinema almost didn't show Memoirs of a Geisha as the higher-ups thought we weren't culturally superior enough to want to see it. Hello, I like watching movies such as those as much as I like watching the latest movie starring Sean William Scott [aka Stiffler from the American Pie movies]...

I attended one of these last year in Huddersfield and it was pretty darned fun - well recommended. Unfortunately it was a bit of a small crowd given the size of the Ottakar's there, though.. pretty much everyone won a prize. XD

I'm keeping an eye out for one near my home town - for one thing, these things look great for meets without the expenditure of ticket prices at expos!

I'm tempted to go to the lancaster one, I use the place pretty often. Can't imagin there'll be enough people there to call it a crowd though

Ottakars have been taken over by Waterstones parent company now, but let's hope they have the same ethos they have now with regarding Manga.

You'd be surprised how many people would come to these... apparantly, they got 265 kids into the event at Lincoln!

Ness, yeah, my hubby told me about the takeover, I'm hoping that means Waterstones will up their manga, rather than Ottakars decreasing it!

Yup! The Lincoln one was the most successful one so far, and its a really poky little Ottakars! You guys should come here if it runs again

I bought tickets to it, but I had a deadline on the Friday (it was a tuesday evening) so I was stressing and working my ass off at home that night

Hey hey, another Basingstoker! :P

I just feel I should point out that Reading's probably closer than Camberley. I'd be guessing the store there's bigger too, so there's more chance of meeting up with other Sweatdrop forumers. According to this topic, there's one at Blackwells on Saturday, the 10th of June. Not sure if I can attend that myself, though.
