europe Get published in AniWay magazine!

AniWay, the Dutch anime & manga fanzine is looking for one or more short (4 - 8 pages) English language manga to publish in one of its future issues. Over the years, we have had the pleasure to publish work from artists from all over the world (including Japan and the UK) and hope to continue this in our fifth year of publication. Stand-alone yonkoma (4-panel) gags are also welcome!

What's in it for the artists? Get your work printed on shiny high-quality paper... in color if you decide so! A great addition to any artists porfolio. AniWay also offers a reasonable compensation, as far as we can manage as a non-profit entity. Of course, you will also receive several copies of the 'zine for showing off to your mates

If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll gladly give more (technical) info.
More about the magazine (in Dutch): www.aniway.nl

I'm interested too In an after-Minami kind of way... but definitely interested. Would it be translated or printed in English?

Wow, that's a lot of PM's all at once . It seems it'd make more sense to post the details in this thread instead. I'll take Wing's questions as a guideline, so here goes!

1] Does a short story have to drawn specifically for Aniway or can a premade comic be allowed for submission?
It's fine if you happen to have a story handy that can be used, as long as you meet the other requirements.

[2] Is there a required amount of 4-komas you are looking to print?
We have a single yonkoma in each issue beneath an editorial page, so send us your best and we'll pick out the ones that we like. If yours gets picked up (I'll notify you of course), please bear in mind that it could take some time for it to show up, since the 'zine is published quarterly and there are also others that send in their yonkoma.

3] Colour comics are acceptable?
Yes, they are! AniWay has been printed in color since the last three issues and it looks very yummy! We're happy that we can offer some color pages to promising artists, since color printing is still very tricky to manage on your own.

4] What's the deadline to send stuff in?
If you are aiming for our next issue, the deadline would be 21st of february. Everything received later will be considered for future issues.

5] What file format would you like the final images to be (.png, .tif, .pdf etc etc?)
If possible, we prefer PSD with fonts supplied. We are not eager to edit your text or anything, but a slip of the keyboard can be easily corrected this way.

6] Resolution ^^; (300dpi, 600dpi?)
Everything 300 dpi and above should be fine, but I recommend 400 or 500 if you are working in B&W and using tones (i.e. if your pages are pretty much 'bitmaps'). It'll reduce the chance of jagged lines a lot.

I hope to have given you an idea of our requirements. If there's anything else you wish to know, drop me a line here and I'll gladly provide the answers!

Thanks Dejiko~ I'm interested in taking part I think... I've got a couple other comics in line too though, so not totally sure!

*hasn't drawn a new comic in well over a year... shame on me...*

I'm up for a collabo though, cuts the load in half.

To answer another question I received by PM: although I know it doesn't really compare to what pro publications offer, we can pay the author of a selected work ten quid for each page. Still, it's a lot more than what I got for my first illustration job

£10 per page is a very generous rate, all things considered. Best of luck to everyone that submits work. It's so cool that Aniway has expanded and is in a position to do this sort of thing. Nice work Dejiko! Hell, I wish I had time to do something myself.

One qu about the full size comic pages:

What size would you like them in? Any guidelines on actual size, allowance for bleed, etc. or templates provided? Anyone who would tone something in black & white bitmaps would be a little concerned if stuff had to be resized/doesn't bleed off the page properly...

I had a quick look at the website but... my dutch is non-existent so I can't find submission guidelines on sizes....

Thought I'd let others know - confirmed by PM:

A4, with 5mm bleed around edge, give sufficient room from spine/gutter and overall edges for vital info like text, key graphics, etc.

Thanks Dock . I really hope this initiative will allow artists to show off their skills to a new audience. I think it's always a good thing when both an artist and readers can broaden their horizons somewhat, since the European doujin movement is still pretty much segregated due to national borders an language. But hey, if there's a bit more understanding of which artist is doing what and where, who knows what things will be like within a couple of years?

Almost forgot - does it have to be a fan comic of an existing anime/manga, or can it be an original story with original characters?

Small update: Sonia's contribution 'Tea Time' has been published and looks pretty neat! . I'll send over a couple of issues shortly so that she may show off the end result

Anyone else interested in submitting a story (following above mentioned guidelines) is welcome to do so!
