Default Manga as a reading aid!

This article comes from the November 21st edition of the Mail On Sunday. Before you hate me for buying this sorry rag of a newspaper, my parents get it, not me They thought I might like the article though. I've typed it out and pasted it below. It was accompanied by the cover of "Psychic Academy #4" and the caption "CONTROVERSIAL: The Manga Strips". o.o

"Child murder, incest and rape... is this really how our schools should be encouraging boys to read ?"

Graphic Japanese comics books, infamous for the violent and pornographic content of their adult versions, are being sent to schols by a Government funded agency.
The Manga cartoons are vividly realistic 'good versus evil' fantasy strips read by all age groups in Japan. In their adult forms, they show the rape, incest and murder of schoolgirls, and depict Lolita-like figures in lewd poses.
Now the Reading Agency, a charity funded by arts, library and Government bodies to promote literacy, has drawn up a list of 150 Manga titles to send to all libraries and schools.
The agency says the books have been vetted to make sure that they are suitable for 13-16 year-olds but critics fear that once hooked on the comics, teenagers will seek out the more violent and pornographic titles.
The prevalence of Manga comic books in Japan has been blamed by some lobby groups for a rise in sexual violence against women, including a gang-rape by four students at the country's top university last year.
Even children's comics, such as Shonen Jump, which has an English-language edition, include characters like Weirdo Mask, a schoolboy who acquires special powers when he puts women's underwear on his face.
Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: "I really don't think they should invite teenagers to read a series like this. It seems inevitable they will be led into the darker materials."
But the Reading Agency's Ruth Harrison said: "Mangas have the reputation of being about sex and violence but I don't think that's justified. There is a huge range of storylines, covering relationships, football, fantasy horror and sci-fi. A lot of the stories are quite sophisticated, with complicated storylines and development of characters. It's more subtle than just ahero going out to battle evil. The main thing is to get teenagers interested in reading."

LOL that's a funny article. Oh no! Teenagers will find porn! Whatever next?

(Well, it's obvious what is next after finding porn. But... you know...)

wow!what an interesting article--i hope they do send these G/Ns out to school liabrarys--we do have a few manga comics, but theyre all in japanese for our japanese students! >_<

Ruth Harrison sounds cool, i like the fact that she doesnt just see all manga as some shallow violent DBZ-style cartoon(although theres nothing wrong with DBZ, i find it addictive!) ^_^

I'm sure kids' parents and teachers said the same about cops & robbers, then cowwboys and indians *years* ago.

Considering this is a country who publishes a lot of top-shelf porn which contains pornographic pictures and disturbing titles on the front cover, I don't think there's a jot of worry here!

If manga was available in my school library I would have been the coolest kid on the block! Anyway... If kids are gonna find porn, they need to be 18 to buy it, or look it up on their parent's computers. (Unless they find some in the cache offline ).

"Let's blame these weird comics that we haven't even read, nor understand."... yep Ruth Harrison = Level-headed Champion! She sounds great!

I get offended by cartoon network for their incredibly low standard of programming.

I love the use of language in these shitty trash newspapers.

"once they're hooked..."

... almost as though manga were... DRUGS!!!

It's great to drum up fear in people. Make them scared of these new things that they are unfamiliar with. We don't want new stuff, we just want to be parochial and xenophobic XD~

Most entertainment mediums have thier undesirable elements, Its personal choice wether a person chooses to watch or read somthing.

As most tabloids do, they tend to go for the most extreem versions of a medium, and tar the whole genre with the same brush. I doubt anyway that an intrest in manga would lead to porn,
round our area shopkeepers are plenty willing to sell fags, booze and porno mags to kids anyway, (I know cause i used to buy such things from the shops near my school, donkys years ago now like, I knew sod all about manga back then ^_^)

There is lots of sex and violence in general culture nowerdays anyway, and not enough manga fans out there to really influence attitudes towards certain issues.

The Ignorant allways tend to attack what they dont understand anyway, and I belive tabloids understand very little, exept how to influence the weak minded, and gulible.

0.0..........Well, that was a weird report, here is the governments telling us that we should look at things through a wider perspective, and they are generalising Manga to Porn and 'Fan Art' of what are probably good Animes/Mangas. lol.

Violent?????? Watch the crappy American dubbed Animes, no blood, no guts, where is the violence there, hell it makes it quite boring to look at, and all because they are worried about the children, then the go and publish films like The Grudge at 15 rating???????

And anyway, if there is a 13 year old who likes Porn, then why would He/She look at comics when there is so much of it on Google???. i mean, the year 8's at our school type in things like womens names at lunch time.

Critics are generally wrong and mis-guided peoples.

[/Rant]

hmm, that must be my longest post yet^^!
