united kingdom London May Expo Art Contest (2009)

It's one month until London Expo (May 23-24), and time for another Sweatdrop Studios Art Contest !! We have our sponsors Letraset and Momiji providing great prize packs for all the categories. This contest is open to all visitors of London MCM Expo, and entries must be submitted in person at the Sweatdrop table. Please read the rules below carefully:

1) All pre-made pieces should be done to the theme of Self Portrait. We want to emphasise that any interpretation or style is allowed and will be judged equally. You can draw yourself full-body, face only, in costume or any other way you feel represents yourself. The upside is that you'll have a piece of art that you can keep and use for other purposes like your website or profile image! Please remember that we are unable to return images.

2) The Artist Alley category will not be themed, and you're free to draw anything you like at the event. However please use the special stamped paper for your entry (they will be distributed all around Artist Alley). Alternatively, ask a member of Sweatdrop to stamp your paper if you brought a pad from home. This way, we know that entries were actually created on that day.

3) We've also introduced a new Young Star Award for artists aged 12 and under. Over past years we've seen an increase in entries by younger artists and we'd like to reward their effort with a special prize. From all the entries we get (pre-made or AA) we'll select one young artist who deserves this recognition.

4) And a little note on entering with fanart. It makes judging very difficult since we can never be sure to what extent an image has been referenced from official art. We wouldn't wish to ban fanart outright, but we do advise people to enter with caution. If in doubt, we strongly encourage you to create an original piece.

5) The categories this year are:

16 and Over - Best Pre-Made Piece (Theme: Self Portrait)
16 and Over - Best Artist Alley Piece

Under 16 - Best Pre-Made Piece (Theme: Self Portrait)
Under 16 - Best Artist Alley Piece

Young Star Award (12 and under)

6) Post any questions and queries in this thread. If you want an urgent reply, please look at this thread from a previous competition...many questions regarding rules, format, content and judging criteria have already been answered.

Prize for each category

- Letraset Manga Pack (www.letraset.com)
Fantastic set of art supplies containing:
TRIA set, x1 Digital Tones, x1 Screen Tones, Comic Pad, Comic Fonts x1, Single Fine Liner

- Momiji Goodie Bag (www.lovemomiji.com) A bumper bag of goodies from the trendy Tokyo-cool lifestyle brand, including a brand new range of 'Zakka' products.

Good luck and happy drawing !!

Hm. Okay, now that I've collected myself.
Is there any specific medium required of the pre-made artworks?
Could I use photoshop, for example, to produce said piece?
Or must they be done in pens instead?

BUZZIN'.

Can be any media you like !! Just remember that we can't return entries so it's best not to hand in any original pieces (scan, print or colour photocopy).

If you don't want to draw yourself you can always draw an interpretation of yourself, like your persona or whatever, that would still count as self portrait but I don't think drawing actual other people would.

When I first read what the theme was, my first thought was "Oh crap, I don't think I can do this.."
but when you actually stop to think about, it's probably one of the most free themes you can actually get!

agree'd it's certainly a challegning topic this year, since for i'm sure most if not all of us it's so difficult to draw ourselves! i mean how best to represent yourself?? On the other hand Mashimaro you could draw yourself as what you'd want yourself to be, like a galmourised character/eccentric version of yourself! =D (the rules are that free right?)
I'd love to see some self-piss takes or 'horribly honest' ones though, they are always fun to see and enjoy! =D

I'm so exited to see what people will come up with i gotta say the stuff gets better and better every year (it's bloody scary)

Wow, it's been months since I last posted here!!

But yay! This seems like a really good theme - I may or may not enter, depends on time and whether or not I'm still in an arty mood right after my Art Exam xD;

[It would be a shame not to enter after such a good theme though!!]

Good luck everybody x]

Yes, you may...as long as the only person being shown on the entry is yourself .

Not that I am taking part, but how do want to check it's a self-portrait? I am just a bit nosy...

Good luck to everyone!
