I finished reading White Violet yesterday ^^ I really enjoyed the first volume!!
I like the story idea (as I've said several times, I like sinister stories like this lol!) and I think you've made a really nice balance between the situations thrown at the characters and the emotional side/how they are feeling towards the situations!

The characters are definitely my favourite part of White Violet, they all have alot of personality and surprises. They certainly develop alot as the story moves on, and in unusual ways that I didnt expect, making me go from disliking to suddenly enjoying some characters (and vice versa!)

I have a few tips art-wise (nothing major haha) but I'll only give you if you want it, mostly really technical things about screentone/printing etc. But overall your panelling and the emotion of your characters is really clear, it was a great read! I look forward to seeing where it goes now that *most* of the characters are in the know about whats going on! @_@

Wow bex has pretty much said all that needs to XD

I read White Violet on the train coming home, (i can't remember if I told you that or not ^^) I too loved the characters, really relatable and likeable people. The sort of people you could get along with in real life very comfortably. I found I warmed to them all very quickly

Also, I think you've really got the knack of pacing down to an art. There were solid breaks between and good space given to all the drama which made it really enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next and getting to know the other characters too^^

keep it up girl!!

Hiya Shazleen, picked up White Violet & thought I would reply ^_^

I liked the expressions and the dialogue, very funny and pretty endearing. ^3^

I think the stuff to consider working on for the next volume would be the following, bearing in mind I understand some of these pages must be a while old now!
  • Page bleed ~ The beauty of a digitally printed, squarebound book is that you can do full-page printing, unlike floppies <3 This should totes be taken advantage of!
  • Tones ~ The tones all blur with moiré which is a real shame! It's been mentioned above though and if you need advice or help with tones then just post about it, SDers and forummers can help with this ^_^
  • Backgrounds and architecture ~The buildings are a little bit scribbly in some pages and there isn't a lot of backgrounds to establish the scenes in others, which can make transitions of scene, age etc a little difficult for the reader to visually figure out I think.
  • Poses~ Sometimes the camera shot is a little too front-facing in numerous panels, which can make the sequential narrative look unintentionally a bit like a puppet show :S There can be some different camera angles utilised to make the more awkward hugging scenes or the dramatic panels look more engaging, so definitely play around more with these opportunities =)
  • Melanie ~ I figured she was a female Damien before you clarified this at the end It seems a shame that she is only a female version of a male chara design-wise, she has lots of strong personality so maybe she could be made to look a bit different, a stronger designed character in her own right perhaps?

I also liked the character designs, very contemporary and elegantly designed.

How long will the series be? If you were to consider reprinting say, 2 or 3 volumes of White Violet's size into one fat volume, it would be a nice opportunity to redo the tones in book 1, and sort out the bleed I think ^_^

Looking forward to volume 2! Keep up the cool work!

Aww, I am so glad you liked it Laura!

Thanks so much for the great advice
I think WV was a big sorta...learning curb for me XD Looking back now, even though I haven't done any comic-ing since it, I can see tons of things that I wanna fix >u<
(Esp that bleed and the screentooones./
Ah, to make everything fit a sorta standard print size, I had to resize pages ID)
I think I'm forever bad at backgrounds- but this seems like a good time to ask:
Do you know any resources online for drawing backgrounds? generally have the gist of drawing landscapes, but more architectural things are difficult for me and...interiors.
I have no idea how one draws a good interior to a building or room.
Do you have any tips on that ouo~?

/weak laughter on the point about melanie.
Derp. I-I did not consider this ouo. (I think I was probably too caught up with trying to make them look similar to consider giving them..individuality ID)
Thanks for that- I don't often get critique on stuff like that so it's really good you pointed it out ouo! I will work on it~

Thanks again >w<~~
I want WV to be around 3-ish volumes long, but I also kinda wanna work on some floppies when I have time relating to them, but with...non-plot centric stories >u<
Yeah, I was actually thinking that..idk, when we get to around 5 print runs on this one(by which time I'll probably have been to and gotten out of uni) I'd re-do the first book and compile all the volumes into...one really fat limited edition version or something XD
